Merge tag 'pinctrl-for-v3.11-1' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/linusw/linux-pinctrl
Pull pin control changes from Linus Walleij:
- A large slew of improvements of the Genric pin configuration support,
and deployment in four different platforms: Rockchip, Super-H PFC,
ABx500 and TZ1090. Support BIAS_BUS_HOLD, get device tree parsing
and debugfs support into shape.
- We also have device tree support with generic naming conventions for
the generic pin configuration.
- Delete the unused and confusing direct pinconf API. Now state
transitions is *the* way to control pins and multiplexing.
- New drivers for Rockchip, TZ1090, and TZ1090 PDC.
- Two pin control states related to power management are now handled in
the device core: "sleep" and "idle", removing a lot of boilerplate
code in drivers. We do not yet know if this is the final word for
pin PM, but it already make things a lot easier to handle.
- Handle sparse GPIO ranges passing a list of disparate pins, and
utilize these in the new BayTrail (x86 Atom SoC) driver.
- Make the sunxi (AllWinner) driver handle external interrupts.
- Make it possible for pinctrl-single to handle the case where several
pins are managed by a single register, and augment it to handle sleep
modes.
- Cleanups and improvements for the abx500 drivers.
- Move Sirf pin control drivers to their own directory, support
save/restore of context and add support for the SiRFatlas6 SoC.
- PMU muxing for the Dove pinctrl driver.
- Finalization and support for VF610 in the i.MX6 pinctrl driver.
- Smoothen out various Exynos rough edges.

to things like system controllers).
- Changes from Lars-Peter Clausen to allow the MMIO regmap to be used
from hard IRQ context.
- Small improvements to the cache infrastructure and performance,
including a default cache sync operation so now all regmaps can
sync easily.

Merge branch 'for-linus' of git://git.linaro.org/people/rmk/linux-arm
Pull ARM updates from Russell King:
"This contains the usual updates from other people (listed below) and
the usual random muddle of miscellaneous ARM updates which cover some
low priority bug fixes and performance improvements.
I've started to put the pull request wording into the merge commits,
which are:
- NoMMU stuff:
This includes the following series sent earlier to the list:
- nommu-fixes
- R7 Support
- MPU support
I've left out the ARCH_MULTIPLATFORM/!MMU stuff that Arnd and I
were discussing today until we've reached a conclusion/that's had
some more review.
This is rebased (and re-tested) on your devel-stable branch because
otherwise there were going to be conflicts with Uwe's V7M work now
that you've merged that. I've included the fix for limiting MPU to
CPU_V7.
- Huge page support
These changes bring both HugeTLB support and Transparent HugePage
(THP) support to ARM. Only long descriptors (LPAE) are supported
in this series.
The code has been tested on an Arndale board (Exynos 5250).
- LPAE updates
Please pull these miscellaneous LPAE fixes I've been collecting for
a while now for 3.11. They've been tested and reviewed by quite a
few people, and most of the patches are pretty trivial. -- Will Deacon.
- arch_timer cleanups
Please pull these arch_timer cleanups I've been holding onto for a
while. They're the same as my last posting, but have been rebased
to v3.10-rc3.
- mpidr linearisation (multiprocessor id register - identifies which
CPU number we are in the system)
This patch series that implements MPIDR linearization through a
simple hashing algorithm and updates current cpu_{suspend}/{resume}
code to use the newly created hash structures to retrieve context
pointers. It represents a stepping stone for the implementation of
power management code on forthcoming multi-cluster ARM systems.
It has been tested on TC2 (dual cluster A15xA7 system), iMX6q,
OMAP4 and Tegra, with processors hitting low-power states requiring
warm-boot resume through the cpu_resume code path"

vfs: export lseek_execute() to modules
For those file systems(btrfs/ext4/ocfs2/tmpfs) that support
SEEK_DATA/SEEK_HOLE functions, we end up handling the similar
matter in lseek_execute() to update the current file offset
to the desired offset if it is valid, ceph also does the
simliar things at ceph_llseek().
To reduce the duplications, this patch make lseek_execute()
public accessible so that we can call it directly from the
underlying file systems.
Thanks Dave Chinner for this suggestion.

Merge branch 'for-3.11-cpuset' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/tj/cgroup
Pull cpuset changes from Tejun Heo:
"cpuset has always been rather odd about its configurations - a cgroup
right after creation didn't allow any task executions before
configuration, changing configuration in the parent modifies the
descendants irreversibly and so on. These behaviors are inherently
nasty and almost hostile against sharing the hierarchy with other
controllers making it very difficult to use in unified hierarchy.
Li is currently in the process of updating the behaviors for
__DEVEL__sane_behavior which is the bulk of changes in this pull
request. It isn't complete yet and the behaviors will change further
but all changes are gated behind sane_behavior. In the process, the
rather hairy work-item punting which was used to work around the
limitations of cgroup descendant iterator was simplified."

- cgroup_subsys_state (css) reference counting has been converted to
percpu-ref. css is what each resource controller embeds into its
own control structure and perform reference count against. It may
be used in hot paths of various subsystems and is similar to module
refcnt in that aspect. For example, block-cgroup's css refcnting
was showing up a lot in Mikulaus's device-mapper scalability work
and this should alleviate it.
- cgroup subtree iterator has been updated so that RCU read lock can
be released after grabbing reference. This allows simplifying its
users which requires blocking which used to build iteration list
under RCU read lock and then traverse it outside. This pull
request contains simplification of cgroup core and device-cgroup.
A separate pull request will update cpuset.

usage bugs.

Pull workqueue changes from Tejun Heo:
"Surprisingly, Lai and I didn't break too many things implementing
custom pools and stuff last time around and there aren't any follow-up
changes necessary at this point.
The only change in this pull request is Viresh's patches to make some
per-cpu workqueues to behave as unbound workqueues dependent on a boot
param whose default can be configured via a config option. This leads
to higher processing overhead / lower bandwidth as more work items are
bounced across CPUs; however, it can lead to noticeable powersave in
certain configurations - ~10% w/ idlish constant workload on a
big.LITTLE configuration according to Viresh.
This is because per-cpu workqueues interfere with how the scheduler
perceives whether or not each CPU is idle by forcing pinned tasks on
them, which makes the scheduler's power-aware scheduling decisions
less effective.
Its effectiveness is likely less pronounced on homogenous
configurations and this type of optimization can probably be made
automatic; however, the changes are pretty minimal and the affected
workqueues are clearly marked, so it's an easy gain for some
configurations for the time being with pretty unintrusive changes."

The usual usage is relatively straight-forward although async kill

There also are some interface concerns - e.g. I'm not sure about

and it's quite useable now.

Merge branch 'sched-mm-for-linus' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull voluntary preemption fixes from Ingo Molnar:
"This tree contains a speedup which is achieved through better
might_sleep()/might_fault() preemption point annotations for uaccess
functions, by Michael S Tsirkin:
1. The only reason uaccess routines might sleep is if they fault.
Make this explicit for all architectures.
2. A voluntary preemption point in uaccess functions means compiler
can't inline them efficiently, this breaks assumptions that they
are very fast and small that e.g. net code seems to make. Remove
this preemption point so behaviour matches with what callers
assume.
3. Accesses (e.g through socket ops) to kernel memory with KERNEL_DS
like net/sunrpc does will never sleep. Remove an unconditinal
might_sleep() in the might_fault() inline in kernel.h (used when
PROVE_LOCKING is not set).
4. Accesses with pagefault_disable() return EFAULT but won't cause
caller to sleep. Check for that and thus avoid might_sleep() when
PROVE_LOCKING is set.
These changes offer a nice speedup for CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y
kernels, here's a network bandwidth measurement between a virtual
machine and the host:
before:
incoming: 7122.77 Mb/s
outgoing: 8480.37 Mb/s
after:
incoming: 8619.24 Mb/s [ +21.0% ]
outgoing: 9455.42 Mb/s [ +11.5% ]

changes, because it's a mixed MM and scheduler topic"

Wound/wait mutexes are used when other multiple lock acquisitions of a
similar type can be done in an arbitrary order. The deadlock handling
used here is called wait/wound in the RDBMS literature: The older
tasks waits until it can acquire the contended lock. The younger
tasks needs to back off and drop all the locks it is currently
holding, ie the younger task is wounded.
See this LWN.net description of W/W mutexes:

As we proceed to untangle the dependencies between platform code and

shrinking, for 3.11 we have 16 branches here and 101 non-merge
changesets, the majority of which are for the stedma40 dma engine
driver used in the ux500 platform. Cleaning up that code touches
multiple subsystems, but gets rid of the dependency in the end.
The mailbox code moved out from mach-omap2 to drivers/mailbox is an
intermediate step and is still omap specific at the moment. Patches
exist to generalize the subsystem and add other drivers with the same

is now the platform with the most changes, followed by OMAP and
EXYNOS.
Two new platforms, TI Keystone and Rockchips RK3xxx are added in this
branch, both containing almost no platform specific code at all, since
they are using generic subsystem interfaces for clocks, pinctrl,
interrupts etc. The device drivers are getting merged through the
respective subsystem maintainer trees.
One more SoC (u300) is now multiplatform capable and several others
(shmobile, exynos, msm, integrator, kirkwood, clps711x) are moving
towards that goal with this series but need more work.
Also noteworthy is the work on PCI here, which is traditionally part
of the SoC specific code. With the changes done by Thomas Petazzoni,
we can now more easily have PCI host controller drivers as loadable
modules and keep them separate from the platform code in
drivers/pci/host. This has already led to the discovery that three
platforms (exynos, spear and imx) are actually using an identical PCIe
host controller and will be able to share a driver once support for
spear and imx is added."

"Lots of bug fixes, cleanups and optimizations. In the bug fixes

block size is smaller than the page size (i.e., file systems 1k blocks
on x86, or more interestingly file systems with 4k blocks on Power or
ia64 systems.)
In the cleanup category, the ext4's punch hole implementation was
significantly improved by Lukas Czerner, and now supports bigalloc
file systems. In addition, Jan Kara significantly cleaned up the
write submission code path. We also improved error checking and added
a few sanity checks.
In the optimizations category, two major optimizations deserve
mention. The first is that ext4_writepages() is now used for
nodelalloc and ext3 compatibility mode. This allows writes to be
submitted much more efficiently as a single bio request, instead of
being sent as individual 4k writes into the block layer (which then
relied on the elevator code to coalesce the requests in the block
queue). Secondly, the extent cache shrink mechanism, which was
introduce in 3.9, no longer has a scalability bottleneck caused by the
i_es_lru spinlock. Other optimizations include some changes to reduce
CPU usage and to avoid issuing empty commits unnecessarily."

sync: don't block the flusher thread waiting on IO
When sync does it's WB_SYNC_ALL writeback, it issues data Io and
then immediately waits for IO completion. This is done in the
context of the flusher thread, and hence completely ties up the
flusher thread for the backing device until all the dirty inodes
have been synced. On filesystems that are dirtying inodes constantly
and quickly, this means the flusher thread can be tied up for
minutes per sync call and hence badly affect system level write IO
performance as the page cache cannot be cleaned quickly.
We already have a wait loop for IO completion for sync(2), so cut
this out of the flusher thread and delegate it to wait_sb_inodes().
Hence we can do rapid IO submission, and then wait for it all to
complete.
Effect of sync on fsmark before the patch:

And a single sync pass took:
real 0m52.407s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.090s
After the patch, there is no impact on fsmark results, and each
individual sync(2) operation run concurrently with the same fsmark
workload takes roughly 7s:
real 0m6.930s
user 0m0.000s

IOWs, sync is 7-8x faster on a busy filesystem and does not have an

f2fs: fix to recover i_size from roll-forward
If user requests many data writes and fsync together, the last updated i_size
should be stored to the inode block consistently.
But, previous write_end just marks the inode as dirty and doesn't update its
metadata into its inode block.
After that, fsync just writes the inode block with newly updated data index
excluding inode metadata updates.
So, this patch introduces write_end in which updates inode block too when the
i_size is changed.

f2fs: remove reusing any prefree segments
This patch removes check_prefree_segments initially designed to enhance the
performance by narrowing the range of LBA usage across the whole block device.
When allocating a new segment, previous f2fs tries to find proper prefree
segments, and then, if finds a segment, it reuses the segment for further
data or node block allocation.
However, I found that this was totally wrong approach since the prefree segments
have several data or node blocks that will be used by the roll-forward mechanism
operated after sudden-power-off.
Let's assume the following scenario.
/* write 8MB with fsync */
for (i = 0; i < 2048; i++) {
offset = i * 4096;
write(fd, offset, 4KB);
fsync(fd);
}
In this case, naive segment allocation sequence will be like:
data segment: x, x+1, x+2, x+3
node segment: y, y+1, y+2, y+3.
But, if we can reuse prefree segments, the sequence can be like:
data segment: x, x+1, y, y+1
node segment: y, y+1, y+2, y+3.
Because, y, y+1, and y+2 became prefree segments one by one, and those are
reused by data allocation.
After conducting this workload, we should consider how to recover the latest
inode with its data.
If we reuse the prefree segments such as y or y+1, we lost the old node blocks
so that f2fs even cannot start roll-forward recovery.
Therefore, I suggest that we should remove reusing prefree segments.

s390/dasd: Fail all requests when DASD_FLAG_ABORTIO is set
Whenever a DASD request encounters a timeout we might
need to abort all outstanding requests on this or

This is especially useful if one wants to fail all
devices on one side of a RAID10 configuration, even
though only one device exhibited an error.
To handle this I've introduced a new device flag
DASD_FLAG_ABORTIO.
This flag is evaluated in __dasd_process_request_queue()
and will invoke blk_abort_request() for all
outstanding requests with DASD_CQR_FLAGS_FAILFAST set.
This will cause any of these requests to be aborted
immediately if the blk_timeout function is activated.
The DASD_FLAG_ABORTIO is also evaluated in

DASD_CQR_FLAGS_FAILFAST bit set.

Once we decrement transaction->t_updates, if this is the last handle

happen, since the commit happens in a separate kernel thread and it's
unlikely this could all happen within the space of a few CPU cycles.
On the other hand, with a real-time kernel, this could potentially
happen, so save the tid found in transaction->t_tid before we release
t_handle_lock. It would require an insane configuration, such as one
where the jbd2 thread was set to a very high real-time priority,
perhaps because a high priority real-time thread is trying to read or

ext4: improve extent cache shrink mechanism to avoid to burn CPU time
Now we maintain an proper in-order LRU list in ext4 to reclaim entries
from extent status tree when we are under heavy memory pressure. For
keeping this order, a spin lock is used to protect this list. But this
lock burns a lot of CPU time. We can use the following steps to trigger
it.
% cd /dev/shm
% dd if=/dev/zero of=ext4-img bs=1M count=2k
% mkfs.ext4 ext4-img
% mount -t ext4 -o loop ext4-img /mnt
% cd /mnt

% for ((i=0;i<160;i++)); do cp $i /dev/null &; done
% perf record -a -g
% perf report
This commit tries to fix this problem. Now a new member called
i_touch_when is added into ext4_inode_info to record the last access
time for an inode. Meanwhile we never need to keep a proper in-order
LRU list. So this can avoid to burns some CPU time. When we try to
reclaim some entries from extent status tree, we use list_sort() to get
a proper in-order list. Then we traverse this list to discard some
entries. In ext4_sb_info, we use s_es_last_sorted to record the last
time of sorting this list. When we traverse the list, we skip the inode
that is newer than this time, and move this inode to the tail of LRU
list. When the head of the list is newer than s_es_last_sorted, we will
sort the LRU list again.
In this commit, we break the loop if s_extent_cache_cnt == 0 because
that means that all extents in extent status tree have been reclaimed.
Meanwhile in this commit, ext4_es_{un}register_shrinker()'s prototype is
changed to save a local variable in these functions.

ext4: implement error handling of ext4_mb_new_preallocation()
If memory allocation in ext4_mb_new_group_pa() is failed,
it returns error code, ext4_mb_new_preallocation() propages it,
but ext4_mb_new_blocks() ignores it.
An observed result was:
- allocation fail means ext4_mb_new_group_pa() does not update
ext4_allocation_context;
- ext4_mb_new_blocks() sets ext4_allocation_request->len (ar->len =
ac->ac_b_ex.fe_len;) to number of blocks preallocated (512) instead
of number of blocks requested (1);
- that activates update cycle in ext4_splice_branch():
for (i = 1; i < blks; i++) <-- blks is 512 instead of 1 here
*(where->p + i) = cpu_to_le32(current_block++);
- it iterates 511 times and corrupts a chunk of memory including inode
structure;
- page fault happens at EXT4_SB(inode->i_sb) in ext4_mark_inode_dirty();
- system hangs with 'scheduling while atomic' BUG.
The patch implements a check for ext4_mb_new_preallocation() error
