I've been thinking about it some more and I believe what I proposed is
correct: features that are or-ed (ONE_FOR_ALL) should start with 0,
those which are and-ed (ALL_FOR_ALL) with 1.
But once we do that, we have to fix another problem in vlan module:
features of a vlan device are mostly computed as bitwise AND of features
and vlan_features of its underlying device. The problem is checksumming
features don't really behave like independent flags as their main
purpose is to be used in can_checksum_protocol() whose logic is that
HW_CSUM (GEN_CSUM) means "can checksum everything" so that it kind of
contains IP(V6)_CSUM functionality. Therefore intersection of HW_CSUM
and IP(V6)_CSUM should result in the latter.
An alternative approach would be to always set IP(V6)_CSUM once HW_CSUM
(any of GEN_CSUM) is set but as for long time people were taught not to
do that and we even have a warning for it, switching to the exact
opposite could cause a lot of problems.

When combining real_dev's features and vlan_features, simple

offloading features as if one set has NETIF_F_HW_CSUM and the

the functionality of NETIF_F_IP_CSUM and NETIF_F_IPV6_CSUM so

net: Introduce a software TSO helper API
Here's a first proposal for a generic software TSO helper API, following
David's suggestion.
There are at least two drivers that currently implement some form of software
TSO: Solarflare network driver (drivers/net/ethernet/sfc) and Tilera GX
network driver (drivers/net/ethernet/tile/tilegx.c).
The rationale behind adding a generic API is to provide a boiler plate with the
segmentation and other common tasks, making this support easier to add in other
drivers.
When designing the API, I've considered mainly two design choices:
1. Implement a series of callbacks that each driver would implement
and the net core code would call to fill in descriptors and egress
that data.
2. Implement an API for drivers to use in a driver's specific tx_tso
function. This functions would exhaust a sk_buff payload, and use the
API as helper for building the headers and segmented data.
I've chosen (2), to avoid function pointers (which was Willy's concern) and
because it seemed less fragile. Of course, this is argueable.
The API is by no means complete, and lacks some features, however it allows
to support TSO in mv643xx_eth and mvneta network drivers with some very
good performance results. I've added this support as an example of the API
in action.
In particular the following needs some revisiting:
1. IPv6 support is lacking.
2. The required descriptor counting needs some verification. The current
implementation might be too "sketchy". The tilegx one can be a good
starting point.
3. The implemenation assumes the hardware can compute the TCP and IP
checksums for the built headers. However, some controllers may need
some initial calculation (such as tilegx, for instance).
Despite this, I hope this proposal is good enough to trigger some discussion
and to check if I'm on the right track. Feedback is much appreciated!

Experience with the recent

common cases where that commit can cause cwnd to be much larger than
necessary. This leads to TSO autosizing cooking skbs that are too
large, among other things.
The main problems seemed to be:
(1) That commit attempted to predict the future behavior of the
connection by looking at the write queue (if TSO or TSQ limit
sending). That prediction sometimes overestimated future outstanding
packets.
(2) That commit always allowed cwnd to grow to twice the number of
outstanding packets (even in congestion avoidance, where this is not
needed).
This commit improves both of these, by:
(1) Switching to a measurement-based approach where we explicitly
track the largest number of packets in flight during the past window
("max_packets_out"), and remember whether we were cwnd-limited at the
moment we finished sending that flight.
(2) Only allowing cwnd to grow to twice the number of outstanding
packets ("max_packets_out") in slow start. In congestion avoidance
mode we now only allow cwnd to grow if it was fully utilized.

enic: Add support for adaptive interrupt coalescing
This patch adds support for adaptive interrupt coalescing.
For small pkts with low pkt rate, we can decrease the coalescing interrupt
dynamically which decreases the latency. This however increases the cpu
utilization. Based on testing with different coal intr and pkt rate we came up
with a table(mod_table) with rx_rate and coalescing interrupt value where we
get low latency without significant increase in cpu. mod_table table stores
the coalescing timer percentage value for different throughputs.
Function enic_calc_int_moderation() calculates the desired coalescing intr timer
value. This function is called in driver rx napi_poll. The actual value is set
by enic_set_int_moderation() which is called when napi_poll is complete. i.e
when we unmask the rx intr.
Adaptive coal intr is support only when driver is using msix intr. Because
intr is not shared.
Struct mod_range is used to store only the default adaptive coalescing intr
value.
Adaptive coal intr calue is calculated by
timer = range_start + ((rx_coal->range_end - range_start) *
mod_table[index].range_percent / 100);
rx_coal->range_end is the rx-usecs-high value set using ethtool.
range_start is rx-usecs-low, set using ethtool, if rx_small_pkt_bytes_cnt is

net-tun: restructure tun_do_read for better sleep/wakeup efficiency
tun_do_read always adds current thread to wait queue, even if a packet
is ready to read. This is inefficient because both sleeper and waker
want to acquire the wait queue spin lock when packet rate is high.
We restructure the read function and use common kernel networking
routines to handle receive, sleep and wakeup. With the change
available packets are checked first before the reading thread is added
to the wait queue.
Ran performance tests with the following configuration:
- my packet generator -> tap1 -> br0 -> tap0 -> my packet consumer
- sender pinned to one core and receiver pinned to another core
- sender send small UDP packets (64 bytes total) as fast as it can
- sandy bridge cores
- throughput are receiver side goodput numbers
The results are
baseline: 731k pkts/sec, cpu utilization at 1.50 cpus
changed: 783k pkts/sec, cpu utilization at 1.53 cpus
The performance difference is largely determined by packet rate and
inter-cpu communication cost. For example, if the sender and
receiver are pinned to different cpu sockets, the results are
baseline: 558k pkts/sec, cpu utilization at 1.71 cpus
changed: 690k pkts/sec, cpu utilization at 1.67 cpus

netfilter: nf_tables: use new transaction infrastructure to handle sets
This patch reworks the nf_tables API so set updates are included in
the same batch that contains rule updates. This speeds up rule-set
updates since we skip a dialog of four messages between kernel and
user-space (two on each direction), from:
1) create the set and send netlink message to the kernel
2) process the response from the kernel that contains the allocated name.
3) add the set elements and send netlink message to the kernel.
4) process the response from the kernel (to check for errors).
To:
1) add the set to the batch.
2) add the set elements to the batch.
3) add the rule that points to the set.
4) send batch to the kernel.
This also introduces an internal set ID (NFTA_SET_ID) that is unique
in the batch so set elements and rules can refer to new sets.
Backward compatibility has been only retained in userspace, this
means that new nft versions can talk to the kernel both in the new
and the old fashion.

cdc_ncm: add buffer tuning and stats using ethtool
Quoting the previous description of this series (skip to the
changelog below if you only want a summary of the changes):
"I have got quite a few reports from frustrated users of OpenWRT
hosts trying to use some powerful LTE modem, but not achieving
full speed. This is typically caused by a combination of
big buffers and little memory, giving in allocation errors and
bad performance as a result.
This series is an attempt to let users adjust the size of these
buffers without having to rebuild the driver.
Patches 1 - 4 are mostly rearranging existing code, in preparing
for the dynamic buffer size changes.
Patch 5 adds userspace control (ab)using the ethtool coalescing
API. This isn't a perfect match, which is the main reason why I
post this series as a RFC.
Patch 6 is an unrelated framing optimization, reducing the
overhead quite a bit and allowing for better use of smaller
buffers.
Patch 7 changes the way we calculate frame padding cutoff. The
problem with big buffers is made much worse by the current padding
strategy where zero padding often can account for more than 90% of
the frames.
Patch 8 add some counters giving some insight into how well the
NCM/MBIM protocol works, supporting further tuning.
Patch 9 reduce the initial maximum buffer size from 32kB to 16kB
in an attempt to make the default better suit all. It is still
possible to tune this up again to the old fixed max, using the
new tuning knobs.
I must admit that I had higher hopes for this series before I
tested it on my own modems. One really unexpected result was
that one of the MBIM modems accepted the new rx buffer size we
set, but happily continued sending buffers of the same size as
before. Needless to say: This did not work very well...
So don't really expect to be able to use any values with any
given device. Firmware implementations are still... I don't
think I have words suitable for a public mailing list.
But I am hoping this will help the many users who have had success
rebuilding the driver with lower fixed limits.
Please test and/or comment!"
Changes:
** RFC -> v1 **
Patch 10 - a follow-up to a comment Joe Perches made in November
2013. I don't always forget :-)
Patch 11 - removes the redundant "connected" driver state, and the
associated .check_connect callbacks.
** v1 -> v2 **
Patch 1 - Better handling of minium rx buffer size, based on feedback
from Oliver Neukum and Enrico Mioso
Patch 5 - fixed locking around timer interval update
Patch 9 - fixed whitespace error
Patch 12 - new fix related to the tuneable tx timer
...and spelling fixes all over the commit messages. I have finally
added a spelling hook, which I'm sure may of you will appreciate :-)

net: cdc_ncm/cdc_mbim: adding NCM protocol statistics
To have an idea of the effects of the protocol coalescing
it's useful to have some counters showing the different
aspects.
Due to the asymmetrical usbnet interface the netdev
rx_bytes counter has been counting real received payload,
while the tx_bytes counter has included the NCM/MBIM
framing overhead. This overhead can be many times the
payload because of the aggressive padding strategy of
this driver, and will vary a lot depending on device
and traffic.
With very few exceptions, users are only interested in
the payload size. Having an somewhat accurate payload
byte counter is particularly important for mobile
broadband devices, which many NCM devices and of course
all MBIM devices are. Users and userspace applications
will use this counter to monitor account quotas.
Having protocol specific counters for the overhead, we are
now able to correct the tx_bytes netdev counter so that
it shows the real payload

We pad frames larger than X to maximum size for devices which
don't need a ZLP after maximum sized frames. This allows the

larger tx buffers. Limit the padding to at most 3 full USB

net: cdc_ncm: use ethtool to tune coalescing settings
Datagram coalescing is an integral part of the NCM and MBIM
protocols, intended to reduce the interrupt load primarily
on the device end of the USB link. As with all coalescing
solutions, there is a trade-off between buffering and
interrupts.
The current defaults are based on the assumption that device
side buffers should be the limiting factor. However, many
modern high speed LTE modems suffers from buffer-bloat,
making this assumption fail. This results in sub-optimal
performance due to excessive coalescing. And in cases where
such modems are connected to cheap embedded hosts there is
often severe buffer allocation issues, giving very noticeable
performance degradation .
A start on improving this is going from build time hard
coded limits to per device user configurable limits. The
ethtool coalescing API was selected as user interface
because, although the tuned values are buffer sizes, these
settings directly control datagram coalescing.
