2 | List of maintainers and how to submit kernel changes
3 | ||
4 | Please try to follow the guidelines below. This will make things
5 | easier on the maintainers. Not all of these guidelines matter for every
6 | trivial patch so apply some common sense.
7 | ||
8 | 1. Always _test_ your changes, however small, on at least 4 or
9 | 5 people, preferably many more.
10 | ||
11 | 2. Try to release a few ALPHA test versions to the net. Announce
12 | them onto the kernel channel and await results. This is especially
13 | important for device drivers, because often that's the only way
14 | you will find things like the fact version 3 firmware needs
15 | a magic fix you didn't know about, or some clown changed the
16 | chips on a board and not its name. (Don't laugh! Look at the
17 | SMC etherpower for that.)
18 | ||
19 | 3. Make sure your changes compile correctly in multiple
20 | configurations. In particular check that changes work both as a
21 | module and built into the kernel.
22 | ||
23 | 4. When you are happy with a change make it generally available for
24 | testing and await feedback.
25 | ||
26 | 5. Make a patch available to the relevant maintainer in the list. Use
27 | 'diff -u' to make the patch easy to merge. Be prepared to get your
28 | changes sent back with seemingly silly requests about formatting
29 | and variable names. These aren't as silly as they seem. One
30 | job the maintainers (and especially Linus) do is to keep things
31 | looking the same. Sometimes this means that the clever hack in
32 | your driver to get around a problem actually needs to become a
33 | generalized kernel feature ready for next time. See
34 | Documentation/CodingStyle for guidance here.
35 | ||
36 | PLEASE try to include any credit lines you want added with the
37 | patch. It avoids people being missed off by mistake and makes
38 | it easier to know who wants adding and who doesn't.
39 | ||
40 | PLEASE document known bugs. If it doesn't work for everything
41 | or does something very odd once a month document it.
42 | ||
43 | 6. Make sure you have the right to send any changes you make. If you
44 | do changes at work you may find your employer owns the patch
45 | not you. | |
46 | ||
47 | 7. Happy hacking. | |
48 | ||

51 | Maintainers List (try to look for most precise areas first)
52 | ||
53 | Note: For the hard of thinking, this list is meant to remain in alphabetical
54 | order. If you could add yourselves to it in alphabetical order that would be
55 | so much easier [Ed] | |
56 | ||
57 | P: Person | |
58 | M: Mail patches to | |
59 | L: Mailing list that is relevant to this area
60 | W: Web-page with status/info
6fb0425b | 61 | T: SCM tree type and URL. Type is one of: git, hg, quilt. |

62 | S: Status, one of the following: |
63 | ||
64 | Supported: Someone is actually paid to look after this.
65 | Maintained: Someone actually looks after it.
66 | Odd Fixes: It has a maintainer but they don't have time to do
67 | much other than throw the odd patch in. See below..
68 | Orphan: No current maintainer [but maybe you could take the
69 | role as you write your new code].
70 | Obsolete: Old code. Something tagged obsolete generally means
71 | it has been replaced by a better system and you
72 | should be using that.
